“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.”
Ephesians 1:18–19
I think this translation using the eyes of your heart is deliberate. There is new research about the heart that sees the heart not just as a pump but as a little brain. (See video below.) The heart reacts in many different ways to how we face life—to our stresses, to an emergency, to endearing moments.
The Bible, especially in the book of Proverbs, has given us great insight into the heart:
- Proverbs 16:23 The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent.
- Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
- Proverbs 21:4 Haughty eyes and a proud heart—produce sin.
- Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
- Proverbs 15:14 The discerning heart seeks knowledge
- Psalm 119:7 I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn Thy righteous ordinances
My hope is that my heart and my treasure are aligned. Jesus makes the connection between our mind and our heart quite clear when he says in Matthew 6:21 (The Message) The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.

P.S. The book “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry has at least five really good lessons in it for life. The one that speaks loud and clear to me is to try to view life with your heart, be compassionate. Hopefully this will then help you see the purpose that god has for you on this earth.
