Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
James 1:27 (NIV)
Wow! Who would have thought after all the scriptures we’ve been given—all the law, all the prophets, all the psalms, all the gospels, and all the letters—that religion acceptable to God could be distilled to something so simple? Being aware of and caring for adults who have lost their spouse and children without parents is what God wants from us in our daily walk.
By acting with charity, care, and awareness—putting vulnerable people first—we can keep ourselves occupied with their welfare and not our own. We develop the selflessness that Christ demonstrated (and commanded) for us to follow.
