For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on, and the covering too narrow to wrap oneself in.
Isaiah 28:20
We often think of our bed as a source of comfort. It offers us rest and protection from the cold. Also, we tuck our children into their beds and promise no harm will come to them as they sleep. But what happens if your bed is uncomfortable, and the covering offers no protection against the cold?
If we sleep at all in such a bed, we still wake up cold, uncomfortable, and wearied.
Probably taken from an old proverb, the symbol of the uncomfortable bed is used by Isaiah to show there is no protection except in God. The Israelites of his day had put their trust in a military alliance with Egypt, but such hope would soon prove to be in vain: likewise, our only trust and comfort should be in our God.
Our father will truly protect us and comfort us in times of cold and darkness.
