For the Lord God is a sun and shield. The Lord grants favor and honor; he does not withhold the good from those who live with integrity.
Psalm 84:11
From the beginning of the world, God has provided for his children.
The record of the bible tells of a heavenly Father that provides food, companionship, and stability. He also provides famine, isolation, and unrest. And that contrast can feel uncomfortable.
In the letter to the Philippians Paul writes in chapter 4 verse 19 “And my God will supply all your needs.” Through his endless wisdom and eternal perspective God is aware of what our varied needs are.
God as a Sun and Shield
Psalm 84:11 refers to God as a sun and shield. Thinking about nature, a plant needs sun to grow but at a certain point too much sun becomes harmful. With too much sun a plant can become scorched and dry out. On the other hand, a shield blocks out sunlight and provides shelter but with too much shade, a plant won’t get the sunlight it needs to grow.
There is a time when sun is good and a time when a shield is good but it’s not fixed or absolute. God has the perspective to provide for us the good that we need and give opportunity for growth. “He does not withhold the good from those who live with integrity.”
The beginning of Psalm 84 talks about dwelling with God and longing for closeness with Him. Inviting God into your everyday life shifts perspective and changes your actions. You’ll find the theme of abiding with God woven all throughout scripture, like in the letter John wrote:
“The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them.”
1 John 3:24
By living a life guided by God’s principles He promises to work in your life and he will not withhold good.
I love the perspective that “God has the perspective to provide for us the good that we need and give opportunity for growth.” God knows when we need his nurturing, but also when we are ready for experiences that stretch us to grow and become more like Him. I also appreciate the reminder that the last sentence you wrote serves. It’s very comforting, especially during this time. 🙂 Love to you both, Maggie & José!
Nice perspective! We must be receptive to understand that sometimes a scorching sun might be necessary to get our attention. But He will provide the nurturing rains as well when we need them.
We always have to remember “the goodness AND severity of God” we need both to develop God’s character to be conformed into the image of Christ. Romans 8:28–29
