Memorizing the Word (Psalm 8)

O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens!

Psalm 8:1

We were challenged in our Sunday school class to memorize Psalm 8. Have you read this beautiful Psalm? I’m sure you have, but

• when you speak it out loud,
• when you hear it in the mouth of your children,
• when you hear it over and over again,

it takes on new meaning. You see it in other scriptures, you want to share it with others and you find yourself recalling it during times of trial.

“O Lord, Our Lord, how excellent is your NAME, in all the earth.”

This verse opens and closes Psalm 8. We can declare that God, He is our God. That He truly is excellent.

“Out of the mouth of babies and nursing infants you have ordained strength.”

Think about the vulnerability of a baby who relies on her parent for every need. This reminds us that we too are babies in the sight of our God. He provides for our every need—even those that we don’t realize we have. He truly is excellent.

“When I consider the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars.”

My child asked how we can truly know that God is there. Out comes Psalm 8! Look to the heavens—His handiwork—and know that it can be nothing short of the work of a Creator. It is not an accident. He has shown us that He is there in everything around us.

“The Son of man that You visit him? . . . sheep and oxen, birds of the air, and the fish of the sea . . .”

God is all around us.

Memorize these words and call on them during those days of darkness and during those days of joy and thanksgiving. May the days be few until the Son of Man appears!
