And in the wilderness, where you have seen how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.
Deuteronomy 1:31
Imagine you’re a little kid, maybe 3 or 4 years old. You and your family are in a crowd, and you are so little, that all you can see are the legs of the grown ups surrounding you. It’s a little scary, because you don’t even know where you’re going and because you can’t see anything. And it’s sort of dark, even though you’re outside, because all the light is blocked by all these adults around you. You’re getting tired, as your little legs try to keep up with everyone else.
And then, your daddy reaches down and takes your hand, which helps a little. He looks down at you and smiles, and you try to smile back, but you’re so tired and this journey is so hard. Daddy stoops down and picks you up in a big hug. “You okay?” he asks, and you hug him and say, “Yes, Daddy.” Then he puts you up on his shoulders, so you can ride up high as you continue your walk.
Now you can see everything all around, so much brighter up here, and you feel safe and comforted. Now you can hold on to your dad and find your way together where you need to go.
I’m here on the Indialantic Florida beach and every time I think of the poem Footprints in the Sand where I picture the one set of footsteps those of God who is carrying me. There are many days when that is how we survive, “all the way that you went until you came to this place.”
Thanks Becky.
Beautiful thought! It reminds me of the parable of the lost sheep where the shepherd puts the lost animal on his shoulders and carries it home. And he rejoices as he is doing it!
